Hi all, I've been playing bass for a while now but when it comes to electronics and modifications i'm pretty new. I want to modify a Fleabass. I'd like to make the bass active although i'm a little confused over a number of things Firstly i'm confused about the difference between an active e.q. circuit and an active pickup. Dec 25, 2011. In my experience, passive basses tend to pick up more hum. On average I have preferred the tone of active over passive. I have come across some passive bass that had stand out tone, even better then most active basses. In my experience these rare though, and I have never owned one. YMMV. Passive basses are more plug n play as you can leave them plugged in and there's less that go wrong with them. Cons: inability to shape your EQ on your bass so you either use an EQ pedal or adjust it on your amp. I used to be huge into active basses but lately I've enjoyed the simple and classic nature of a good ol passive P bass. An active bass guitar features a built-in preamp that's capable of boosting certain frequencies, while passive instruments can only cut frequencies. Active basses also allow players to get a hotter signal to their amplifier even while driving a longer cable run—especially if you're a bassist with an effects board. Just making a ballpark estimate: A battery might have 500 mAh of juice, and a bass might draw 5 mA. At that rate, you've got 100 hours, which would be consistent with plugging it in on Friday and having it peg out by today. 5mA is a LOT of current for a bass, unless there is a short somewhere. Or as Marcus calls it If you’re used to a full-sized bass, the TRBX174 won’t feel much different. It’s slightly on the heavier side at 12 lbs (5.5 kg), but unless you’re of smaller stature, you’ll quickly get used to it. The neck pickup is in the perfect spot for anchoring your thumb while fingerpicking. Your hands won’t get tired quickly. Oct 17, 2005. PDX, OR. owner, OVNIFX and OVNILabs. With almost any bass, you can tell if it's active or passive by looking to see if it uses a battery. Battery = active. The reason I said "almost" any is that there are a few Alembic basses that use an external power supply, and some battery compartments are hidden under the pickguard and are
